Civil Works

Civil Works systematically undertakes all civil and building construction projects of the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI). The Unit which operates under the Technology Development Center (TDC), consists of twelve professionals lines ranging from Construction Project Management, Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical engineering, Environmental assessment to Masons and Painters.

The unit holds the mandate of developing feasibility studies as well as architectural, civil, structural, electrical, plumbing and drainage designs, specifications, preliminary and detailed cost estimates. It also charged with the implementation of the designs undertaking contract administration, supervision, interim valuation and final certification.

Through its functions Civil works handles a wide range of construction projects both internally and externally, in consult with top Management and other UIRI departments. One of the biggest accomplishments is the Machining, Manufacturing and Industrial Skills Training Center at Namanve Industrial and Business Park, where Civil works is coordinating major assignments including, obtaining necessary construction approvals from Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), site clearance, reduction of ground levels and preparation of a camp for the Chinese team, water and power supply to the site, dredging and desilting of the existing drainage channel in the service corridor, diversion of existing utility services and conducting monthly project management site meetings to track project progress and adherence to the initial specifications within the constraints of health, safety, cost, quality and time.

Other external projects include the construction of a model dairy farm in Karubuga, Juice processing facility in Itojo Ntungamo District, Wine processing in Maziba Kabale District, Peanut Processing facility in Kumi District, Meat Processing in Arua District, Animal feeds processing facility in Busiika Luwero District, Palm Oil processing facility in Kanungu District among others.

The internal projects worked upon comprise of the expansion of the chemistry laboratory, construction of ATCG laboratory, the proposed wine processing facility as well as the expansion of the paper plant and the renovation of the former UNBS block for more incubation projects.

Civil works sustains an active role in undertaking routine renovation and rehabilitation of all the building facilities at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute alongside the external projects. This is evinced by both the upcoming and existing infrastructure.

  7. Gable top filler at UIRI
  8. Boiler house at UIRI
  9. Foundry facility at UIRI
  10. Potato Processing facility in Kabale
  11. Meat Processing facility in Busia (renovation)
