Mushroom Value Addition Bonanza at UIRI

Mushrooms are highly nutritious and medicinal foods that are essential in human health. Based on this, the Uganda Industrial Research Institute has over the years offered skills in mushroom propagation as well as value addition and also developed a variety of products from mushrooms including instant porridge, soup thickeners, instant soups and chili from mushrooms.

The Institute has conducted a number of studies on different mushroom varieties including shitake, ganoderma and the button mushrooms are ongoing. However, the Institute has capitalized on promoting the oyster mushrooms whose growth conditions are suitable to the Ugandan environment.
