The Uganda Industrial Research Institute has been heralded as one of the government agencies that has been quick to offer hope amidst the COVID 19 frustrations. In addition to the mask and sanitizer production, the Uganda Industrial Research Institute embarked on a journey to Omoro District in Northern Uganda and trained 40 youth of whom the majority were school-going girls waiting for the COVID 19 pandemic crisis to subside.

The 40 youth were trained in two groups to ensure social distancing and were readied for the manufacturing sector. One group training in liquid and bar soap making as well as Shampoo. While the other group trained in making juice and concentrates from Hibiscus, Tamarind, and Pineapple.

The District Agriculture Officer at Omoro Subcounty impressed by the output of the training pledged to link the youth with opportunities at the district level and with the District Commercial Officer. He also said the use of a variety of agricultural produce (from Hibiscus, Tamarind, and Pineapple) to make juice had inspired him to encourage farmers to grow them for value-addition purposes.
