UIRI Scientist Hailed at State of the Nation Address
The State of the Nations Address brought to light the government’s achievements for the financial year 2017/18, and UIRI’s efforts where among them. During the Address His Excellence the President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni congratulated Phillippa Ngaju Makobore, the Head of the Instrumentation Division for developing an Electronically Controlled Gravity Feed Infusion Set (ECGF), a medical device designed to accurately administer intravenous (IV) fluids and drugs by controlling the rate of fluid flow base.
The ECGF which has won two international awards is an innovation created to save the lives of children by eliminating the shock effect that affects 10% of children admitted to Ugandan hospitals. The choice to develop the device emerged after it was realized that approximately 11-12% children die, often within hours of admission. In 2013 the Engineers and technicians at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) made a needs assessment visit to Mulago National Referral Hospital’s Children’s Acute Care ward and undertook the initiative.
